2. About the course
The SNOMED CT Implementation Course builds on the knowledge gained during the SNOMED CT Foundation Course. The objective of the course is to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to successfully implement a SNOMED CT-enabled system. It covers a wide range of topics, including Introduction to Implementation, Maps, Subsets and Value Sets, Data Capture, Data Analytics, Extensions and Editions, and more.
A prerequisite for course entry is the successful completion of the SNOMED CT Foundation Course. Click here to access information regarding the Foundation course and a link to enrolment.
There is no set course duration, schedule or a completion time limit. Once enrolled you can access the course content continuously. The estimated effort required for each module is 3 to 5 hours of study.
2.1. Course Options
In this section we will explore the different ways in which you can complete the course. We have made the course flexible so that it can be taken in a way that's beneficial to the Implementation journey you are on.
Module specific completion:
Do you require knowledge only in a certain area? Then you are able to go directly to a module and complete only that module(s) to learn about a particular topic. There is no requirement to complete modules in a certain order (although some recommendations may be given for complimentary modules) as you can pick and choose which modules are relevant to you. If you complete all the content within a module as well as the practical assignment you can collect a module badge to show your achievement.
Stream completion:
We have organized the modules into what we refer to as learning 'streams'. We have grouped modules together into general areas of learning. There are 3 streams:
- General Implementation & Customization
- EHR Implementation Principles
- Extension Management
You can choose which stream is relevant to your implementation journey or work your way through all the streams. If you complete all modules in a stream and the stream assessment you can collect a completion certificate in addition to individual module badges to show your level of knowledge.
Total Course Completion:
If you wish to complete all areas of the course (17 modules and 3 stream assessments) you are then able to collect an overall course completion certificate.
3. Learning Streams and Course Modules
The course consists of:
An introductory section - Implementation Basics
To get started, we recommend completing the following introductory modules before beginning any of the three learning streams:
- Introduction to Implementation
- Content and Features
Three learning streams:
- General Implementation and Customisation
- EHR Implementation Principles
- Extension Management
The three learning streams each contain five modules, a skills assessment, and a completion certificate available upon completion.
Course Modules
Overall, there are 17 individual modules in the course. The image below summarizes the topics covered in each module and shows which learning stream each module belongs to:
In the course, each module tile features a colored banner at the bottom, indicating the learning stream it belongs to.
Some modules are linked by related topics. We may advise you to look at another module before or after completion of a module. However, as described in the course options page, how you approach completing the modules depends on what your individual learning journey requires.
3.1. Lessons
Within each of the modules are a number of lessons. The number varies depending on the module topic. Completion of all lessons within a module is required to be able to access the module assignment and obtain a completion badge.
Within each lesson there are various types of activities such as:
- Videos
- Quizzes
- Reading (ebooks or diagrams, tables etc...)
You can work through the content at your own pace. If you need to leave a lesson part way through and log out the system will remember where you are so you can continue where you left off when you next access the lesson.
3.2. Assignments
Each module ends with an assignment which is designed to solidify your learning of the module content. The assignment could be a series of questions, a practical exercise using one of our tools or a document submission of your answers to a question. Details of what you need to do will be stated in the assignment information itself.
Usually a pass score of 70% is required to pass the assignment. Once this has been achieved and the module feedback completed you will be eligible to collect a module completion badge.
3.3. Badges
In order to achieve a badge of completion for the module you must complete:
- all lessons within the module
- a module assignment
- module feedback
Please note that the assignment must achieve a pass score of 70%.
All 17 modules have a badge (see example below):
Upon completing all requirements, you will receive an email confirmation regarding your badge achievement.
You can also view all your earned badges by clicking on the "Badges" tab on the course homepage. To download a badge, simply click on the "Issued to me" date and then select the "Download" button.
4. Skills Assessments
If you complete all modules within a 'stream' you are then able to take an assessment which will assess your knowledge of all the modules within that stream. The skills assessments are accessible within the 'Course Achievements' area.
Skills Assessments are usually a set of 20 questions to be answered within a time limit of 4 hours. There are 3 attempts available and a pass score of 70%.
Once passed you will be able to collect a certificate of completion to show your understanding and completion of the content within that area.
5. Course Achievements & Completion
Within the course there are a number of achievements available.
- Completion badges - These can be found on your profile page. You will also be emailed a copy of a badge when it's been achieved.
- Stream completion certificates
- Course completion certificate
5.1. Completion Certificates
There are three completion certificates available for each of the three streams of modules.
In order to gain a stream completion certificate you will need to successfully complete all modules within that stream (including all lessons, activities and practical assignments) and pass a stream assessment with a score of 70%.
Upon successful completion of a skills assessment for a particular stream then a completion certificate will become available. To view and download a copy of this please go to the 'Course Achievements' area which is the second tile on the course homepage.
5.2. Course Completion
If you wish to complete the course in it's entirety you must achieve not only completion of the individual modules (which includes the lessons and module assignments) but also all three stream assessments.
Once you have completed all 17 modules and three stream skills assessments you will then automatically achieve a Certificate of Completion for the Implementation Course as a whole. This demonstrates that all parts of the course were completed and passed.
You can access this completion certificate in the 'Course Achievements' area of the course.
